Stampede of Service (SOS) is USF's largest day of service. 2011 was a record-breaking year with over 3000 students coming out to serve in the Tampa Bay community. This day of service was the largest community service project in USF's history. If you want to help make history happen in 2012, sign up to volunteer today! Sign-up Deadline is Wednesday, December 21st. SOS 2011 is projecting to have over 3000 students in attendance this upcoming January 14, 2012.

Stampede of Service was founded in 2006 by a student, Maxon Victor, who wanted to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. It has now become one of the largest traditions that USF has to offer. This one-day community service celebration is led by students to get the word out about volunteering. In 2009, 2600 students participated in the event and in 2011 there were over 3000 students in attendance. Students are assigned a social issue and sent throughout Hillsborough County learning and engaging in service for the day. Spend time with friends or with your student organization in helping to have a positive impact on our community while having FUN!

The purpose of SOS is to get students involved! Even though this is a one-day event, students receive the resources necessary to continue participating in community service on a constant basis. Students are encouraged to check out other Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement (CLCE) community service events and continue to keep the spirit of service and Martin Luther King Jr. alive.

SOS serves more than 60 different organizations in the Tampa Bay community, volunteering with:

  • Senior Citizens
  • The Environment
  • Youth
  • Homelessness
  • Poverty
  • Women’s Issues
  • Education
  • And many more

History of SOS

Stampede of Service (SOS) was developed in January 2006 to bring together the USF community in celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday through meaningful community service. The USF Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement and Student Government worked together with a committee of students, staff and community organizations (including Parks & Recreation, the University Area Community Development Corporation and Clean City) to develop the event. For the inaugural 2006 event, over 900 students from the campus community including student organizations, USF Athletes, Student Government and Fraternity-Sorority Life joined together to volunteer side by side with the community in East Tampa in local parks and neighborhoods. The day was a huge success and the tradition of Stampede of Service was born.

Because of the overwhelming response to this project from students, administrators and the community, the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement has continued to host this annual event. Stampede of Service has quickly become an important tradition for USF and also serves as a kick-off event for the MLK Day Celebration events. In January 2009, over 2500 USF students, faculty, staff and community members joined together to celebrate and honor the MLK legacy through service in the Tampa Bay community.

In 2011, we had over 2500 students, and this upcoming SOS 2012 we project to have 2500-3000 students all actively engaging in the Tampa Bay community.

SOS serves more than 60 different organizations in the Tampa Bay community, volunteering with:

  • Senior Citizens
  • The Environment
  • Youth
  • Homelessness
  • Poverty
  • Women's Issues
  • Education
  • And many more

SOS 2012 is scheduled for January 14, 2012.
