Overview

Since 2006, Stampede of Service (SOS) has been providing large groups of volunteers the opportunity to commemorate the MLK Celebration by participating in community service with local non-profit community partners. As the largest community service event in USF's history, Stampede of Service is a day completely devoted to participating in service, enjoying time with friends, and making a difference. It is not only an important campus tradition, but also a meaningful USF connection to the Tampa Bay community.

The purpose of SOS is to get students involved! Even though this is a one-day event, students receive the resources necessary to continue participating in community service on a constant basis. Students are encouraged to check out other Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement (CLCE) community service events and continue to keep the spirit of service and Martin Luther King Jr. alive.

SOS serves more than 60 different organizations in the Tampa Bay community, volunteering with:

Senior citizens, the environment, youth, homelessness, poverty, women's issues, education, and many more.

Individuals & Student Organizations

The structure of SOS has changed for the better this year! Therefore, Site Leader Registration and Participant Registration is SEPARATE!.

All registrants (either individuals or members of organizations) will need to register as an individual through this online registration tool. Persons who do NOT register before the deadline will not be guaranteed an assignment with their organization or a t-shirt. You can designate which organization you are a part of and whether or not you would like to serve as a site leader.

Students that register with an organization will serve with other members of the organization but larger organizations may be split up to serve more than one site. Many of our community partners cannot accommodate large groups so by splitting up some organizations, we hope to work towards a better experience for participants and community partners.

* Organizations of 10 or more people are required to provide a site leader. Organizations with over 20 people need to provide one site leader per 20 students. Please communicate with your organization members to determine site leaders.

Site Leaders

Site leaders are vital to a successful SOS. Site leaders help to lead students through the day, encourage students to participate, and also maintain a high level of energy and enthusiasm. Do you have what it takes to lead large groups of students through various volunteer activities? If you're interested, please check that you would like to serve as a site leader on your registration.

ESite Leaders will be assigned to a Stampede of Service Leadership Council (SLC) member in November! SLC members will notify site leaders of their specific service site in November and serve as the site leaders’ main point of contact throughout the planning and execution of SOS:

Site Leaders must attend TWO site leader trainings

  • First Training: December 2nd at 6pm or Tues. December 3rd at 6pm
  • Second Training: Wed. January 15th at 6pm or Thurs. January 16th at 6pm (date/time subject to change)

* You will indicate which training you are available for during the time of registration.

Faculty/Staff

Faculty/Staff volunteers will support the "Stampede of Service" Kick-Off event by assisting with various tasks such as participant check-in, t-shirt distribution, breakfast distribution, signage posting, vehicle directing and more. Volunteers will receive a limited edition t-shirt, breakfast, and the immense satisfaction of helping USF's largest service project of the year!

  • Should the project end early, you are encouraged to have another activity ready for the remaining time such as a reflection, Question & Answer session, overview of the organization, or a site tour. You're also encouraged to have extra staff on hand to help supervise the students if there are more than 20 visiting your site.

Sponsors

Become a sponsor of SOS! With your donations, we can provide transportation, food and t-shirts. In addition to supporting a day of community service, this would also be a wonderful marketing opportunity. Your company would have access to approximately 3000 USF students at the event, as well as, have your logo marketed as a sponsor of the event on the website and t-shirt.

History of SOS

A student, Maxon Victor, who wanted to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, founded Stampede of Service (SOS) in 2006. The USF Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement and Student Government worked together with a committee of students, staff and community organizations (including Parks & Recreation, the University Area Community Development Corporation and Clean City) to develop the event. For the inaugural 2006 event, over 900 students from the campus community including student organizations, USF Athletes, Student Government and Fraternity-Sorority Life joined together to volunteer side by side with the community in East Tampa in local parks and neighborhoods. The day was a huge success and the tradition of Stampede of Service was born.

Because of the overwhelming response to this project from students, administrators and the community, the Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement has continued to host this annual event. Stampede of Service has quickly become an important tradition for USF and also serves as a kick-off event for the MLK Day Celebration events. In January 2009, over 2500 USF students, faculty, staff and community members joined together to celebrate and honor the MLK legacy through service in the Tampa Bay community. In 2012, SOS experienced its largest turnout with over 3000 students in attendance! Sign-up to volunteer to be part of Stampede of Service's story!
